Are you looking to set up your own residential crypto mining rig right here in Australia?
If so, it’s important to have the right electrical requirements for your home to ensure your rig can run on your house’s power supply.
In this blog post, Brisbane-based Armitage Electrical cover 6 things you need to do to prepare your house for your new crypto mining rig if you live in Australia.
Tip 1: Determine your ventilation requirements
Cooling is a crucial part of using any mining equipment.
Adequate ventilation can be created through the reasonable spacing between crypto mining units, but it’s also wise to consider if the use of fans or air conditioning will be needed.
Tip 2: Assess your electrical circuit
Mining rigs use a high and constant draw of power. Most power circuits in Australian homes already have fridges, freezers, and other equipment constantly running.
The addition of any mining rigs to the same circuit can easily overload the circuit, causing you to lose power in your home.
That’s why we recommend hiring a specialist electrician like Armitage Electrical in Brisbane to undertake your electrical setup so you can confidently run your crypto mining rigs, without affecting the supply to other electrical appliances in the home.
Tip 3: We recommend a minimum 32-amp circuit – and don’t forget to check the number of power points you’ll need
In a standard setup with Armitage Electrical, we commonly install a dedicated 32-amp circuit with a safety switch and multiple power points to connect your mining rigs to (depending on the size of miners).
Tip 4: Evaluate whether solar can offset the cost of powering your mine rig
Depending on the size of your setup and time of operations, this may be advantageous but it’s best to discuss your options with your solar installer and energy retailer.
Energy retailers have different buyback programs for solar systems and if you plan on offsetting your crypto mining with solar, choosing the best buyback option is essential to determine viability!
Tip 5: Consider upgrading to 3-phase power
If a 3-phase upgrade is required, we have a price list with inclusions and exclusions for overhead and underground upgrades.
We can provide a quote for any other power requirements provided we have details of power requirements for your crypto mining rigs.
Tip 6: To upgrade your power supply beyond the maximum 3 phase / 63-amp limit, note that there are hoops (and paperwork) to jump through with Energex
It’s important to keep in mind timeframes! While getting your electrical setup installed for a crypto mining rig can be done in just a few hours, more complex setups such as 3-phase upgrades may take up to 3 months until the final connection is made.
Depending on the location of the property, it is possible to go beyond the 63-amp/3-phase residential power limit, but this requires negotiation with and approval from Energex.
Armitage Electrical can provide consultation services to help facilitate this process with Energex more smoothly.
How much does it cost for a “standard” electrical setup for a crypto mining rig?
Some crypto miners may only need a 10-amp power point commonly found throughout an average Australian home.
Depending on the size or number of miners being set up, additional power points, dedicated circuits, or 15-amp power points may be required.
To give you an indication, general power points (10-amp) start from $165ea inc. GST. Dedicated 20-amp circuits start from $440inc GST while dedicated 32-amp circuits start from $660 inc. GST. *Prices are correct at the time of publishing this article.
