How do I know if I have 3 phase power?
At Armitage Electrical, we receive this question frequently from homeowners and business owners alike.
The answer to this is quite simple once you know where to look and what to look for.
In this article, we explain two simple steps to identify if you have three-phase power and why it pays to check what power supply you have.
2 simple steps to identify your power supply
Step 1 – Find your switch board
One method is to examine your switchboard to determine if you have single or three-phase power. The switchboard regulates electricity distribution to your property and typically consists of a large panel containing different switches, circuit breakers, and other power control devices.
The switchboard is usually positioned near the entrance or garage in residential settings. For commercial establishments, it‘s commonly found within the central premises of the building but not necessarily adjacent to the electricity meter board.
Step 2 – Check the circuit breakers
Once you have located the switch board, examine the circuit breakers within the switchboard. These breakers are self-operating electrical switches safeguarding against circuit overload or short circuits.
Look for the Main Switch breaker and observe its width. If it is as wide as one pole, you have single-phase power. However, if it spans the width of three poles, you have three-phase power.
Identifying 2 phase power
Two-phase power is also used in some Australian homes. The identification process is similar to that of single and three phases, except that the main switch will have a width of two poles.
Why does it pay to check your electrical supply?
Identifying whether you have single, two or three-phase power can give you valuable insights into your electricity supply’s capabilities.
By understanding what kind of electrical system you currently have and taking into account your future energy needs, you can make well-informed choices about possible upgrades or adjustments. These decisions will enhance the efficiency of your daily activities and ensure optimised energy consumption.
