When you need a switchboard upgrade
Solar systems often require switchboard and meter box upgrades as Energex will not connect smart meters to old style switchboards/meter boxes.
Porcelain fuse switchboards were very common pre-1970 when electrical demands were different without more modern items like air conditioners, induction cooktops, heaters, pools/spas and solar systems. They are often not suited to today’s households and these switch boards should ideally be upgraded.

Things to consider for a Switchboard Upgrade
As of Janunary 1st, 2019 any addition to electricals circuits, lighting circuits, air conditioning circuits or hot water systems other than direct replacement, requires that circuit to be upgraded to a safety switch.
Old style switch boards are unable to be modified to comply with these laws and require upgrading. If the current switch board is able to be modified it may be cost effective to bring all circuits up to the latest standard instead of paying separately.
If large purchases are being made – pools solar systems or Air conditioning units – advice from an electrician about the switchboard should be your first call to save being caught out.
